Direction & Distance Sense: Visual Method for Quick Solving
Direction problems carry 1-2 marks and should take under 1 minute each with the right approach.
The Diagram Method
Step 1: Draw a compass (N at top, E at right, S at bottom, W at left). Step 2: Start from a point and draw each movement as described. Step 3: Use arrows to show direction. Step 4: For "turns right/left" — physically turn from the current facing direction.
Key Rules
"Turn right" = clockwise 90°. "Turn left" = anti-clockwise 90°. "Shadow in front at sunrise" = facing West. "Shadow behind at sunrise" = facing East. "Shadow to right at sunrise" = facing North.
Shortest Distance
After drawing the complete path, the shortest distance from start to end is the hypotenuse. Use Pythagorean theorem: √(horizontal² + vertical²). Common Pythagorean triplets to memorize: 3-4-5, 5-12-13, 8-15-17, 7-24-25.
