Input-Output Machine: Pattern Recognition Tricks for Quick Solving
Input-Output questions appear in banking Mains and carry 5 marks. They test pattern recognition and logical thinking.
Common Machine Types
Sorting-based: Numbers and/or words are rearranged in ascending/descending order, one element per step. Operation-based: Mathematical operations are applied to numbers at each step. Swapping-based: Elements swap positions based on a pattern.
Solving Approach
Step 1: Compare Input with Step 1 output — what changed? Step 2: Compare Step 1 with Step 2 — same type of change? Step 3: Identify the pattern (which element moves, what operation occurs). Step 4: Apply pattern to answer the question.
Practice Tip
Don't try to understand the full machine logic for every question. Often you can answer by just tracking the specific element asked about. This saves 2-3 minutes per set.
