Quadratic Equations: Solve in 15 Seconds with These Shortcuts

Quadratic equations carry 5 marks in banking Prelims and can be solved in under a minute for all 5 questions with the right approach.

The Sign Method

For ax² + bx + c = 0: Find two numbers whose product is ac and sum is b. The signs of these numbers give you the relationship between roots. If both roots are negative → x > y. If both positive → depends on values.

Quick Factorization

Practice recognizing common patterns: x² - 5x + 6 = (x-2)(x-3). The more you practice, the faster you'll spot factors. Start with perfect squares and common products.

Comparison Without Solving

Sometimes you can compare roots without fully solving. If equation 1 has larger constant term and similar coefficient pattern, its roots are likely larger. This saves precious seconds.
