Ratio, Proportion & Time-Work: Master These Connected Concepts
Ratio-Proportion and Time-Work are deeply connected concepts. Understanding this connection unlocks shortcuts for both.
The Core Connection
If A can do work in 10 days and B in 15 days: Efficiency ratio = A:B = 15:10 = 3:2. A does 3 units/day, B does 2 units/day. Total work = LCM(10,15) = 30 units. Together: 5 units/day → 30/5 = 6 days.
Ratio Shortcuts
Componendo-Dividendo: If a/b = c/d, then (a+b)/(a-b) = (c+d)/(c-d). Cross multiplication for comparison: Compare 3/7 and 5/11 → 3×11 vs 5×7 → 33 vs 35 → 5/11 is larger.
Time-Work LCM Method
Always use LCM method: Take LCM of individual days as total work. Calculate each person's daily output. Add/subtract as needed. This method is 3x faster than the fraction method.
